Hello, Cherryfield!

Cherryfield, Maine is a dot on the Downeast map notable for being the wild blueberry capital of the world. It’s home to Maine fruit behemoth Wyman’s, first incorporated in 1874 as a sardine cannery and later converted to a cannery for wild blueberries!

A wild blueberry barren.

WILD MAINE BLUEBERRIES

More recently, Cherryfield has welcomed the Catherine Hill Winery (c. 2011) and the Paisley Loon Cafe and Coffeeshop (established 2021) to its ranks, giving the casual day-tripper two more reasons to chart a course for the town of 1,100.

Catherine Hill Winery

Roll into Cherryfield on 182, and the first thing you’ll notice is all the graffiti on the rock faces lining the road. It’s a sign you’re close to the winery, which sits on a pretty, forest-enclosed hill and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Sometimes there’s live music. Always it’s a dog-friendly venue. We tried the Spring River Sauvignon Blanc, characterized by “notes of grapefruit.” Yum!

The Paisley Loon Cafe and Coffeeshop

Right on the banks of the rushing Narraguagus River perches the Paisley Loon, a bright and caffeinated beacon in an otherwise sleepy town. The Loon’s sandwiches are handmade, piled high, served hot or cold, and are delicious followed by moose tracks ice cream. Or, try the breakfast, served all day.
